CHRISTMAS EVE
We finally got out of Seattle, after many delays by snowy weather, icy roads, and delayed auto repair work (last minute fixes before the big trip - replacing bushings, a cracked seal & worn transmission mount). Drove through snow, rain, more snow, more rain, etc. heading south on I-5. Learned how to put chains on tires, learned that driving snowy, unfamiliar roads in the dark is treacherous. Decided to play it safe; stayed at a Motel 6 in Troutdale, just inside the Oregon border.
Factoid: Oregon and New Jersey are the only two states where self-service gasoline is illegal.
CHRISTMAS
Drove east to Hood River, OR, where we were able to stay at a friend's place. Discovered that wood pellet stoves are awesome, but can be difficult to get started.
Ate mac n cheese and watched too many movies on TV.
Realized that Christmas doesn't seem as much like Christmas without the tree and presents underneath it.
DECEMBER 26TH, 2008
Planning to explore Hood River, then head south. Considering checking out some hot springs on the way. Weather services calling for lots of rain in the redwoods over the next week, which almost sounds appealing in comparison to the wintry mix which held us captive in Seattle. After some quality time by the stove, I think my boots are dry for the first time in at least a week. Looks like we'll have to give up on Bend, OR, since it might leave us stranded on the wrong side of the mountains
We're spending tonight in Coos Bay, OR. We expect to be in California redwoods by tomorrow.
